Crimes of the Future is Cronenberg to the core, complete with its fair share of authorial flourishes (the moaning organic bed that its characters sleep in is a five-alarm nightmare unto itself) and slogans (“surgery is the new sex”). At the same time, however, this hazy and weirdly hopeful meditation on the macro-relationship between organic life and synthetic matter ties into his more wholly satisfying gross-out classics because of how it pushes beyond them.

For all the clever satirical touches and asides, the gorgeously intricate, wondrous stop-motion landscape is ultimately pure Selick, imbued with a fitting color scheme of swirling, eerily glowing greens and purples choreographed against a mischievous score by Bruno Coulais that effectively sets the mood for the film’s pre-Halloween arrival.

There’s a very entertaining daftness and theatre nerdery to See How They Run (the title sounds uncomfortably like Run For Your Wife) as director Tom George takes the same approach to The Mousetrap that Ken Russell took to The Boyfriend: playing up the artificiality of it all. The comedy is shallow in the right way, and Rockwell’s bleary world-weariness contrasts nicely with Ronan’s saucer-eyed idealism.

The points of Östlund’s Triangle are far from subtle. Vanity is toxic; fortunes corrupt; everyone loves to see an Instagrammer getting their comeuppance. But across its well-earned two-and-a-half-hour running time, epic schadenfreude keeps edging into genuine sympathy, and we feel just sorry enough for these awful people for the next humiliation to sting just as hard.

»Emergency Declaration« ist nach »Train to Busan« quasi »Plane to Busan«, auch wenn hier die Gefahr eher terroristischer statt untoter Natur ist. Als eine unbekannte Krankheit auf einem Flug auftaucht und auch sonst alles schief zu gehen scheint, müssen die Menschen an Bord und unter anderem Song Kang-ho (»Parasite«, »Memories of Murder«), der hier einen Polizisten am Boden spielt, irgendwie aus dieser unpraktischen Situation rauskommen.

Kogonada hat schon mit seinem ersten Film »Columbus« eine Perle geschaffen, und alles deutet darauf hin, dass ihm das diesesmal wieder gelungen ist. Mit dabei ist auch Colin Farrell (»The Lobster«, »In Bruges«). Da dieser Film sehr wahrscheinlich keinen Deutschlandstart bekommen wird, ist das Fantasy FilmFest eine der wenigen Möglichkeiten ihn auf der großen Leinwand zu sehen. Dazu kommt der Premium Zeitspot am Sonntag um 15:30. Also auf keinen Fall verpassen.

Hier spielt die Goldene-Schnecken-Preisträgerin Ana de Armas (»Knives Out«, »No Time to Die«) unter der Regie von Andrew Dominik (»Mindhunter«, »Die Ermordung des Jesse James durch den Feigling Robert Ford«) die vielleicht größte weibliche Filmikone und das Sexsymbol, für das das Wort erfunden wurde: Marilyn Monroe (kennen die Kidz die Gute noch?). Nach dem gleichnamigen Mega-Roman von Joyce Carol Oates wird in »Blond« die Tragödie des It-Girls, der Schauspielerin und Präsidenten- wie Pulitzerpreisträgerverführerin im großen Stil erzählt. Der Film geriet schon vor längerem wegen zu expliziten Sexszenen in Kontroversen, jetzt hat er es aber auf die venizianische Weltbühne und demnächst in die weltweiten Wohnzimmer geschafft.
