McDonagh gelingt so ein beeindruckend menschlicher Film, der deutlich geerdeter wirkt als alle seine bisherigen Arbeiten. Der persönliche Gehalt des Themas gibt dem gesamten Film eine gewisse Intimität, die man bis in die Figuren hinein spürt. Es ist ein sehr witziger Film mit dutzenden Zitaten für die Ewigkeit, der gleichzeitig aber sehr ernst und schwermütig wird. McDonagh bleibt bei seiner unversöhnlichen Konsequenz, die schon in »Brügge« etwas Irrwitziges wie Erschreckendes hatte. Indem er hier trotz einiger Exzesse ins Extreme und Skurrile eine unerwartete Bescheidenheit offenbart, berührt seine Geschichte tief. Und man denkt an diese Berührung am Ende sogar mehr als an all die vielen schönen Lacher.

Cregger slowly builds bone-chilling and suspenseful sequences up to screechingly operatic moments of face-melting horror, and then swiftly cuts to a different chapter, making a hard left into a completely different mode, taking us all on the roller-coaster ride. His facility with comedy also aids in these jarring tone switches, and »Barbarian« is as funny as it is terrifying.

“The Tell-Tale Heart” uses an unreliable narrator. The exactness with which the narrator recounts murdering the old man, as if the stealthy way in which they executed the crime were evidence of their sanity, reveals their monomania and paranoia. The focus of the story is the perverse scheme to commit the perfect crime. One author, Paige Bynum, asserts that Poe wrote the narrator in a way that “allows the reader to identify with the narrator”.
