Wie ein Altman legt der Regisseur hier Witz und Abgrund eng zueinander. Manchmal schlicht in Wortwitz und Slapstick, zumeist aber im Bizarren, wo man bereitwillig schmunzelt, sich aber plötzlich etwas Unheimliches an der Oberfläche reibt. Wenn sich Elizabeth für das Method Acting etwa im Gang der Tierhandlung, wo die einstige Affäre sich ereignete, hinkauert und in ein Stöhnen und Reiben versinkt, dann ist das so dreist und direkt, dass man es lachend kaum fassen kann. Aber es verschwimmt in etwas Ungutes. Spiel, Realität und Delirium sind kaum noch trennbar. Für niemanden.
